Unfortunately, upperclassmen and transfer students are not eligible for this program. If you are already enrolled at Rutgers or you are a transfer student interested in pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree after graduating from Rutgers, please visit the Department of Kinesiology and Health website for information about the major in Exercise Science and advising for applying to graduate programs.
Students need to be accepted into the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) or School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS)
- Students can express interest formally by filling out the interest survey.
- It is recommended students follow the course plan of study upon starting Rutgers in the Fall of their First Year before declaring Exercise Science as a major.
- Students are eligible to declare Exercise Science as their major in the Spring Semester First Year
- Attend one of the first two Declaration Meetings
- Make sure to declare before the Pre-PT Application deadline closes on March 10.

- Students are eligible to apply to the Pre- PT Concentration in the Spring Semester First Year

- Requirements for Application
- Must maintain a minimum of 3.3 GPA during First Year Fall Semester at Rutgers University
- Can have no more than one C in any course
- If a grade of C is received, that course must be retaken by the time of application into the DPT 4+3 Program, and a letter grade of B or higher needs to be achieved in that course.
- Complete a minimum of 25 volunteer hours under a licensed Physical Therapist.
- Must have completed the following courses at Rutgers in Fall First Year:
- 01:119:115 General Biology
- 01:377:140 Foundations of Kinesiology and Health

- After applying, selected students will interview for the Pre-PT Concentration
- A committee will meet and select qualified students into the Pre-PT Concentration
- Students are eligible to apply to the DPT Program in the Summer after Second Year
- Students must apply through the Physical Therapy Centralized Application System (PTCAS) the Rutgers DPT Program - Newark Campus
- Generally, PTCAS opens July 1
- Applications must be completed by September 1
Requirements for Application for DPT Program:
- A minimum GPA of 3.5
- All course grades must be a B or higher
- If a grade of C is received, that course must be re-taken by the time of application into the DPT 4+3 Program, and a letter grade of B or higher needs to be achieved in that course.
- Completed all required courses per recommended in Pre-PT Concentration course plan
- Three Letters of Recommendation (Two from licensed PT’s & One from a Professor with whom the applicant has taken course work)
- A minimum of 200 PT hours in total in a minimum of two different settings under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist
- The Joint Program Oversight Committee (JPOC) will meet to review applications deemed complete with all requirements met.
- Students will be applying to the Rutgers DPT Program - Newark Campus in the summer of the Second Year of study.
- Students will be notified of their acceptance in the Fall Semester of their Third Year
- Students will begin graduate school Summer, immediately after their Fourth Year
- This is contingent upon:
- Successful completion of undergraduate studies
