Only students accepted to the Rutgers University–New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) or School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) that are enrolled as a First Year student and who meet the requirements are eligible to apply to the DPT 4+3 program.

Unfortunately, upperclassmen and transfer students are not eligible for this program. If you are already enrolled at Rutgers or you are a transfer student interested in pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree after graduating from Rutgers, please visit the Department of Kinesiology and Health website for information about the major in Exercise Science and advising for applying to graduate programs.

Students need to be accepted into the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) or School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS)

  • Students can express interest formally by filling out the interest survey.
  • It is recommended students follow the course plan of study upon starting Rutgers in the Fall of their First Year before declaring Exercise Science as a major.

  • Students are eligible to declare Exercise Science as their major in the Spring Semester First Year
  • Please visit Kinesiology and Health Homepage to learn more about how to declare the major

  • Students are eligible to apply to the Pre- PT Concentration in the Spring Semester First Year
  • After students sign up for a declaration meeting, students will be given access to the Online Pre-PT Concentration Application. Please try to sign up for one of the first two meetings.
  • Requirements for Application
    • Must maintain a minimum of 3.3 GPA during First Year Fall Semester at Rutgers University
    • Can have no more than one C in any course
      • If a grade of C is received, that course must be re-taken by the time of application into the DPT 4+3 Program, and a letter grade of B or higher needs to be achieved in that course.
    • Must have completed the following courses at Rutgers in Fall First Year:
      • 01:119:115 General Biology
      • 01:377:140 Foundations of Kinesiology and Health

    • After applying, students will interview for the Pre-PT Concentration
    • A committee will meet and select qualified students into the Pre-PT Concentration
    • Students planning to apply to the DPT program the following year must prepare to take the GRE exam.

Students are eligible to apply to the DPT Program in the Summer after Second Year

  • Students must apply through the Physical Therapy Centralized Application System (PTCAS) the Rutgers DPT Program - Newark Campus
    • Generally, PTCAS opens July 1
    • Applications must be completed by September 1
  • Requirements for Application for DPT Program:
    • A minimum GPA of 3.5
    • All course grades must be a B or higher
      • If a grade of C is received, that course must be re-taken by the time of application into the DPT 4+3 Program, and a letter grade of B or higher needs to be achieved in that course.
    • Submitted official GRE scores
      • The GRE must be taken within 5 years prior to the application date
    • Completed all required courses per recommended in Pre-PT Concentration course plan
    • Three Letters of Recommendation (Two from licensed PT’s & One from a Professor with whom the applicant has taken course work)
    • A minimum of 200 PT hours in total in a minimum of two different settings under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist
  • The Joint Program Oversight Committee (JPOC) will meet to review applications deemed complete with all requirements met.
  • Students will be applying to the Rutgers DPT Program - Newark Campus in the summer of the Second Year of study.

  • After review of applications, the committee selects qualified students into the DPT Program
  • Students will be notified of their acceptance in the Spring Semester of their Third Year
  • A total of 20 students will be accepted into the Rutgers DPT Program
  • Students will sign a contract detailing their admission to the DPT Graduate Program
  • During the Third and Fourth Year of the undergraduate program, students will be required to maintain a 3.5 GPA with all grades B or higher
    • If the requirements stated above are not met, the student will lose their seat in the DPT Program
      • The seat will then be given to the next eligible student from the student cohort in the Pre-PT Concentration
    • If an accepted student withdraws:
      • The seat will then be given to the next eligible student from the student cohort in the Pre-PT Concentration
    • Students not accepted into the DPT Program may still remain in the Pre-PT Concentration and receive the following benefits:
      • The Department of Kinesiology and Health will remain committed to supporting students in reapplying for the next year in the general application pool
      • Students are eligible to reapply to both Rutgers Graduate Program through the standard application process
      • Students may continue to participate in events held for the Pre-PT Concentration

  • Students will begin graduate school Summer, immediately after Fourth Year
  • This is contingent upon:
    • Successful completion of undergraduate studies
