What made you want to become a PT?
I have always been interested in pursuing a career in health care and helping others. Having worked as a PT aide in an outpatient orthopedic practice for the past 2 summers has solidified my interest in becoming a PT. In my daily observations of the physical therapists working with their patients, I was drawn to the fundamental role in which the physical therapist had in helping patients through their recovery and rehabilitation process. I have witnessed student athletes, elderly patients, and people of all ages with various challenges from injuries, post-surgery or age-related physical conditions make improvements and regain the strength and independence needed to return to their normal daily activities. My interactions with these patients allowed me to gain insight into some of the challenges that the patients were going through and how I could be supportive of them during their rehabilitation. I realized what I enjoyed the most was the building of these relationships with the patients and seeing their confidence grow and their overall mood improve altogether. It made me appreciate how much of an impact PTs could have on improving the quality of life and overall physical health and mental well-being of a patient.
