Community Outreach

Community Service provides individuals with the opportunity to become active members of their community, while leaving a long lasting, positive impact on not only society but the students as well. The Rutgers University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) 4+3 Program will be pairing with the Make-A-Wish® Foundation New Jersey Chapter. This philanthropic collaboration will provide students accepted into the DPT 4+3 Program with meaningful community outreach opportunities.

Wishmakers on Campus

Students accepted into the Pre-PT Concentration will participate in Wishmakers on Campus, a program that helps college students come together to raise money for local children with critical illnesses. Through this program students will fundraise and participate in events that will support Make-A-Wish® New Jersey. The money raised from fundraising through the Wishmakers on Campus program will go toward benefiting Make-A-Wish® New Jersey.

How Did Make-A-Wish® America Begin?

The inspiration for Make-A-Wish® began in 1980 from the love that family and friends had for a seven-year-old Phoenix boy named Chris Greicius, who had leukemia. Chris dreamed of becoming a police officer, and his family, friends and the Arizona Department of Public Safety made his wish come true – just four days before he passed away. Chris’ mother, Linda, and those who helped grant his wish created Make-A-Wish® in his memory, enabling his legacy to live on in the more than 300,000 wishes that have been granted since. A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic and more willing and able to battle their critical illness. For many, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illnesses, according to a recent study.

  • 89% percent of nurses, doctors, social workers and child life specialists surveyed say they believe that the wish experience can influence wish kids’ physical health.
  • 99% of parents reported that the wish experience gave their children increased feelings of happiness.
  • 91% observed that the wish experience decreased their children’s depression or sadness.
  • 97% of parents said the wish experience strengthened their families.

Make-A-Wish® New Jersey Events

Throughout the year, Make-A-Wish® New Jersey will be hosting various events to raise funds and support wishes taking place in the upcoming future. These events are a time for celebration of wishes already granted and those that are soon to come. Each event is different, and details will be posted as the events get closer. These events provide a fun and exciting environment for all participants and volunteers in attendance.
